The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns over the challenges facing Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, suggesting a possible review if persistent issues remain unresolved.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during a visit by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, he questioned the policy’s sustainability, citing food shortages, accommodation struggles, and erratic academic calendars.
He cautioned that if students continue to suffer under the current system, it might be better to restructure or even reconsider the initiative.
In response, Minister Iddrisu assured the Asantehene that the government is actively working on measures to address these challenges, particularly improving feeding and accommodation to strengthen the policy’s impact.
The Free SHS program remains a key but controversial government initiative.
