A netizen questioned Stephen Amoah, a member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso. Amoah claimed that the constitution is no longer working.
He stated that if your child is defiled and you are poor, you are finished. Those responsible for justice are being suspended, he said.
The netizen responded on X, asking if Amoah would have freedom to protest if the constitution was truly ineffective.
During the 'Save the Judiciary' demonstration, Amoah expressed his concerns. He said, “If police, lawyers, and courts aren’t functioning, then you are unprotected.”
He added that mothers rush home after market hours due to fear. If something happens to them, there is no law to protect them.
Amoah warned that if your child is defiled in the future and you lack money, you will be helpless. He criticized how people cannot speak out when robbed.
He accused those meant to ensure justice of facing reproach from the government.
Some Ghanaians reacted strongly to Amoah's statement online. One user suggested making the country "ungovernable" as they feel neglected by the NPP.
Another user referenced Charlotte Osei’s removal and criticized past actions of the NPP. They urged learning from history instead of ignoring public sentiment.
One more user pointed out that if the constitution were dead, protests wouldn’t happen freely. They argued that freedom still exists despite complaints about its effectiveness.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties planned a demonstration on May 5 against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
They marched through Accra alongside several other parties like LPG and NDP. The NPP claims this attempt by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) threatens judicial independence.
This protest follows President John Dramani Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo based on a prima facie case determined by the Council of State.
The President formed a committee under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate related petitions.
