Illegal miners reinstall new machines after soldiers destroyed old ones

Illegal Miners Replace Burnt Machines in Ghana

Illegal miners have returned to the forest. They are installing a new Changfan machine. This follows the destruction of their old equipment by soldiers.

In a video shared on X, young men showed the installation process. They stated they will continue illegal mining, known as galamsey. One miner said they would not stop despite arrests and government efforts.

The soldiers had previously burned two of their machines. The miners covered their faces during the video to avoid identification. This was likely to prevent arrest by security forces.

Social media users reacted strongly to the video. Many expressed frustration over ongoing illegal mining activities. Comments included calls for more effective measures against galamsey.

One user suggested that soldiers should remain at mining sites longer. Another noted that the problem has worsened under the current administration. Others emphasized that tackling funding sources is crucial for stopping illegal mining.

President John Mahama has also weighed in on this issue. He cautioned against burning seized equipment and urged engagement with small-scale miners. His goal is to develop strategies to combat galamsey effectively.

The situation highlights deep-rooted issues like poverty and corruption in Ghana. Until these problems are addressed, illegal mining may continue to thrive.
