The Ghana Immigration Service has launched a special operation in Kaneshie and Abossey Okai. This operation aims to remove street children and their guardians from the streets. It took place early on Friday, May 16, 2025. Immigration officers led the effort to address non-Ghanaian street dwellers, especially minors, in Accra.
During the operation, many women with children were rounded up. Many of these individuals are believed to be foreign nationals. Officers engaged with them before escorting them away from busy areas. These areas include sidewalks and intersections where they solicit alms.
Officials state that this operation is part of a nationwide initiative. The goals are to decongest the streets and enhance public safety. It also aims to curb child exploitation and identify illegal residents.
Dr. Ernestina Tetteh leads the Coalition for Street-Connected Children Organisation (CSCCO). On May 8, 2025, she expressed serious concerns about child streetism in Ghana. She noted that many street-connected children come from neighboring countries like Chad and Niger.
Dr. Tetteh mentioned that statistics are hard to find but numbers are rising daily. She said this issue has worsened over time compared to her childhood experiences with "salaka." She warned that some children may be part of a larger network involved in organized begging.
Lack of strategy and data hinders efforts against child beggars, according to Dr. Tetteh.
