In-camera hearing meant to preserve sanctity of Chief Justice’s office – Dr Khalid

Professor Sharif Mahmud Khalid is the Economic Adviser to the Vice President. He recently discussed the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

He stated that holding proceedings in-camera protects her office's dignity. He shared these views on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, May 24.

Prof. Khalid emphasized the sensitive nature of this constitutional process. He noted that discretion is necessary to avoid public spectacle and reputational harm.

“This is not just about an individual; it’s about the office,” he said. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the dignity of the Chief Justice's position.

An open hearing could politicize the process, he warned. It might also place undue pressure on the judiciary.

“Transparency is important in democracy,” Prof. Khalid acknowledged. However, some processes require confidentiality for fairness and integrity.

He urged Ghanaians to trust in the legal process during this time.
