Inactive trains not due to fuel shortage - Railways Authority CEO

Dr. Frederick Appoh, CEO of the Ghana Railways Development Authority, addressed recent reports. He clarified that the Tema–Impakadan railway line is not operational due to infrastructure issues, not fuel shortages.

Some workers at the Ghana Railway Company are on strike. They claimed the two trains on this route are inactive because of a fuel shortage.

On JoyNews’ The Pulse show, Dr. Appoh emphasized that both trains are in excellent condition. He stated, “Tema–Impakadan remains one of the key infrastructure assets of the country.” He added that the non-operation of trains is unrelated to fuel shortages.

Dr. Appoh explained that a track inspection on March 15 revealed significant problems along the railway corridor. These included illegal encroachment, theft of materials, and vandalism.

He noted, “We encountered a lot of issues.” Buffer stock was nearly gone due to scrap dealers taking it. Many nuts and screws had been illegally removed from the tracks. Efforts are underway to fix these problems.

The Railways CEO mentioned that GIFEC is leading mitigation efforts and progress has been made. “I can confidently say that 75% of the ongoing GIFEC mitigation action plan is almost complete,” he said.

Dr. Appoh also acknowledged a salary crisis affecting staff at Ghana Railway Company Services (GRCS). He expressed concern over non-payment of salaries for over seven months.

“This issue is deeply concerning,” he stated, recognizing the hardship faced by GRCS staff. He assured workers that the Ministry of Transport is working to resolve this delay.

“I’m aware of steps being taken by the Minister to address this issue,” Dr. Appoh added.
