Incentive packages needed to tackle staff attrition in health sector - Parliament

Dr. Sebastian Sandaare, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, has raised concerns about staff motivation. He noted that many health professionals are resigning or leaving the country for better opportunities.

Dr. Sandaare is also the Member of Parliament for Daffiama Bussie/Issa in the Upper West Region. He believes that good incentives for health specialists and nurses can help address this issue.

He made these comments during a visit to Goaso Municipal Hospital in the Ahafo Region. The committee aimed to understand the hospital's operations better.

Dr. Sandaare urged hospital management to motivate health workers. He emphasized that the government is working to improve healthcare quality across the country.

Other committee members included Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, MP for Pru East, and Professor Dr. Titus Beyuo, MP for Lambussie constituency. Dr. Sandaare assured that they would present critical challenges in healthcare to the government.

Dr. James Ankomah, Medical Superintendent of Goaso Municipal Hospital, listed several challenges facing the facility. These include inadequate oxygen plants and low staff remuneration.

He highlighted a lack of incentive packages and expensive housing as major issues contributing to staff attrition. Dr. Ankomah also called for a Regional Hospital to serve the growing population's health needs in the area.
