Themed events coincided with national and global occasions. Celebrations included Chocolate Day on February 14th, International Women’s Day on March 8th, and Cultural Awareness Month in March. These events showcased what inclusion looks like in practice.
Chocolate Day at Newmont
Newmont kicked off its inclusion-focused activities with Ghana’s National Chocolate Day in February. This day celebrates appreciation and recognition of chocolate.
The Women and Allies (W&A) Business Resource Group shared locally made chocolate bars with employees in Ahafo, Akyem, and Accra. This simple gesture fostered a culture of care and connection among the workforce.
Supporting Women, Accelerating Action
In March, Newmont celebrated International Women’s Day under the theme “Accelerate Action.” The company aimed to advance real conversations about gender equity in mining.
A highlight was the ‘Returning Mother’s Ceremony’ at Ahafo North site. This event welcomed women returning from maternity leave and recognized their dual roles at home and work.
Newmont also commissioned a lactation room at Ahafo South’s Subika Underground for nursing mothers transitioning back to work.
Additionally, the Women in Newmont digital campaign spotlighted female employees' journeys. It shared inspiring stories showcasing women's vital contributions across various roles.
Preserving Culture, Inspiring Unity
Newmont also celebrated Cultural Awareness Month to appreciate Ghana's diverse heritage. Engaging activities connected employees with cultural themes.
The celebrations began with a talk by Dr. Kwaku Darko Ankrah on cultural identity and preserving indigenous knowledge.
Other activities included an Inter-site Cultural Quiz testing knowledge of Ghanaian languages and traditions. Employees participated in sessions sharing traditional wisdom to enrich workplace interactions.
Market Days recreated traditional Ghanaian markets at operational sites featuring local foods, crafts, and attire. Employees proudly posted photos dressed in traditional wear on the company intranet.
This visual celebration reflected Ghanaian identity's richness through cultural expression.
Inclusion Beyond Occasions
While these events were memorable, Newmont emphasizes that inclusion is an everyday obligation. The company supports working parents through inclusive policies and facilities promoting comfort.
Business resource groups uplift underrepresented voices within the organization. By turning observances into platforms for education and storytelling, Newmont fosters a thriving workplace for everyone.
As the year progresses, Newmont remains committed to creating a safe, respectful environment for all employees.
