Individuals will no longer mine in forest reserves under new law — Murtala

The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, announced plans to repeal the Minerals and Mining Act 2003. This move aims to prevent individuals from mining in forest reserves.

Dr. Muhammed stated, “We are beginning the process of repealing the Minerals and Mining Act 2003.” He emphasized that this change will help protect forest areas.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, expressed disappointment in the government's efforts against illegal mining. He criticized what he sees as inconsistencies in their approach.

“How come the president who said he would revoke L.I is now suggesting amendments? That is a blot,” Dr. Ashigbey remarked. He also called the current law ineffective against galamsey activities.

“This is a bad law, although its intention was good,” he added. He noted that members of both NDC and NPP have joined forces to intensify illegal mining.

Dr. Ashigbey alleged that some leaders from both parties are involved in illegal mining across Ghana. “Leading members of the ruling NDC have been accused of engaging in illegal mining,” he stated.

He urged the government to take action against offenders from both past and present administrations. He called on the new CID boss to avoid political interference during investigations.

“Just to say that the new CID boss should not follow that despicable statement by the former President,” Dr. Ashigbey said regarding Akonta Mining's alleged activities.

He urged the CID and Attorney General to prosecute these cases effectively. “The CID and A-G need to take this case to court,” he insisted.

Additionally, he mentioned accusations against an NDC MP for Aowin and an NDC secretary for Axim regarding galamsey involvement. “The President should order investigations into these two cases,” he concluded.
