Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey is the Managing Director of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC). He emphasized the need for innovation and sustainability in Ghana’s cocoa and food sectors.
At a forum in Accra, he urged a national rethink on food production. This includes how cocoa is produced and processed. The goal is to build resilience, add value, and drive economic growth.
"Cocoa is vital to our culture and economy," he stated. It supports millions of farmers and families in Ghana. However, challenges like climate change and market volatility exist.
Dr. Dogbey stressed that innovation is key to overcoming these issues. CMC is adopting new practices and collaborating with stakeholders like COCOBOD. They aim to enhance cocoa quality and promote sustainable production.
"Sustainability is central to our mission," he said. CMC prioritizes farmer well-being, environmental protection, and community support.
He also pointed out Ghana's export of raw cocoa while importing finished products at higher prices. This situation shows the need for local processing capabilities.
By adding value locally, Ghana can retain more economic benefits. This will also provide healthier food options for its people.
Dr. Dogbey called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, private sector players, NGOs, and research institutions like CSIR. A united effort is essential for building a resilient food system.
"As we celebrate innovation in healthy food production," he concluded, "we must commit to uplifting farmers, strengthening our economy, and protecting our environment."
