The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, announced that 107 foreigners have been deported since he took office. This is part of the government's crackdown on illegal mining, known as "galamsey."
Minister Muntaka spoke to the media about the government's commitment to stopping illegal mining. He highlighted its severe environmental and economic impacts on Ghana.
He also directed the Inspector-General of Police to transfer all police commanders in mining areas. This includes regional, divisional, and district commanders. The goal is to replace long-serving officers who have not effectively addressed galamsey.
"The decision comes from their prolonged stay in these areas," said Minister Muntaka. "We need new faces and fresh perspectives to tackle this challenge."
He emphasized that the government is determined to fight illegal mining. More stringent measures will be introduced to protect Ghana's natural resources.
Illegal mining has been a persistent issue in Ghana. Its devastating effects on the environment and water bodies have drawn widespread criticism.
