Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has urged the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to act more decisively. He wants them to address the rising involvement of foreign nationals in illegal mining and fraud.
During a visit to the GIS office in Kumasi, he stressed the need for stronger enforcement. He also called for closer collaboration with the Police and other agencies to speed up deportations.
“We will take tough actions against foreigners involved in illegal activities,” he stated. This includes those engaged in galamsey or tree cutting, as well as fraud known as sakawa. “Our main goal is not prosecution; we want to deport these individuals.”
He explained how deportation works. “If a foreigner is caught engaging in illegal activities, they must be swiftly deported.” He added that they should be placed on a stop list to prevent further harm.
Mubarak emphasized quick action from GIS officers. “The Police, Military, or National Security may make arrests,” he said. “But once they do, GIS must act immediately.” He urged them not to wait for handovers and to demand quick transfers of detainees.
He also discussed deportation costs. The government will not cover these expenses. “I have informed all embassies that they are responsible for repatriation costs,” he said.
For instance, he mentioned a recent case involving a Ugandan national. They instructed the Ugandan embassy to buy the ticket and arrange their citizen's return.
Mubarak reassured GIS officers of support: “Rest assured, we have your back.” He concluded by stating that protecting the country is their priority.
