Irate NDC Supporters Set Party Office Ablaze Over MCE Appointment in Mampong

Tensions rose in the Asante Mampong Constituency on April 10. A group of angry National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters stormed the party's office. They vandalized property and set items on fire during their protest.

The youth, linked to different factions within the party, were upset. They reacted to reports that Esther Dwomoh was nominated as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The protestors found this unacceptable since there was no official announcement from the Presidency.

They argued that the shortlist for MCE included three candidates. These were Yakubu Yakubu, the 2024 NDC Parliamentary Candidate; Mohammed Kamil, the current Constituency Chairman; and Imoro Iddrisu, a party member. The youth believed one of these vetted individuals should be chosen instead.

The protest turned violent quickly. Supporters damaged property and burned chairs and tables outside the party office. Police arrived to restore order but reported no arrests by Friday morning.

Fire officers also came to extinguish the flames before more damage occurred. Kwaku Bernasko, the Constituency Communications Officer for NDC, confirmed the incident. He noted growing unrest within local party ranks.

“It’s a group of youth agitating about a rumour regarding Esther Dwomoh,” Bernasko said. “They expressed their displeasure at our office, and we couldn’t control them.” He added that several party properties were broken or burned.

Currently, there has been no official statement from the Presidency about the MCE nomination. This incident raises concerns about internal unity in light of upcoming elections in 2024. It also highlights frustrations among grassroots members over decision-making transparency.
