The Information Minister, Fatima Abubakar, has sparked heated debate by questioning whether pulling a gun in Ghana constitutes a crime.

Her remark came during a spirited defense of the outgoing Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following public uproar over her receipt of a national award from President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Fatima declared Hawa Koomson one of the “most competent women” in government, asserting that her track record as a minister justified the recognition.

However, her fiery defense took a controversial turn when she challenged critics focusing on Hawa Koomson’s alleged firearm discharge during the 2020 elections, asking bluntly, “Is it a crime to pull a gun in Ghana?”

The comment has since ignited a political storm, with many questioning the government’s commitment to accountability and ethical standards. Critics argue that Hawa Koomson’s alleged actions, which led to chaos and fatalities, contradict the principles of leadership.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia joined the chorus of disapproval, describing the award as an insult to Ghanaians. He lambasted the government for honoring a figure he claims symbolizes political recklessness.

Meanwhile, Fatima maintains that the award was based on merit, dismissing the allegations as a smear campaign fueled by “bad news.”
