Israel celebrates 77th Independence, calls for peace amid Gaza conflict

Israel celebrated its 77th Independence Day in Ghana with a vibrant event in Accra. The theme was "Bridges of Hope."

The celebration included diplomats, clergy, traditional leaders, and government ministers. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also attended.

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Roey Gilad, spoke about the long ties between Israel and Ghana. These ties began in 1956 when Israel first established a presence in Africa. He noted that challenges still exist despite these strong relations.

Ambassador Gilad mentioned geographical distance as a challenge. It requires two connecting flights to travel between the countries. He also pointed out the ongoing war in Israel as another factor slowing progress.

The event called for renewed hope and solidarity with Israel during the Gaza conflict. Ambassador Gilad shared that over 1,200 people have died due to the conflict. More than 50 hostages remain after 578 days.

He emphasized the pain and uncertainty faced by families of hostages. “Hamas needs to release our hostages,” he stated firmly. He added that Hamas must lay down their weapons to end this tragedy.

Minister for Works and Housing Kenneth Gilbert Adjei delivered the keynote address on behalf of the government. He acknowledged Israel’s contributions to Ghana in various sectors like agriculture and technology.

Adjei praised Israeli companies for creating jobs and supporting economic development in Ghana. The celebration highlighted resilience, partnership, and a shared desire for peace.

The government plans to inaugurate a task force to fast-track establishing a national airline.
