It’s good Ofori-Atta has been declared wanted again – Martin Kpebu

Private lawyer Martin Kpebu supports the Office of the Special Prosecutor's (OSP) decision to declare former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted. However, he believes a different approach could have been better.

“It is good Ken Ofori-Atta has been declared wanted again,” Kpebu said on TV3’s The Key Points on June 7. He expected the Special Prosecutor to use video conferencing for interrogation instead.

His remarks follow the OSP's recent classification of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive. This decision came after he failed to attend multiple summons for in-person questioning. Announced on June 2, 2025, this action marks a significant escalation in pursuing accountability from former President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Due to Ofori-Atta's absence, the OSP has reached out internationally. They have asked INTERPOL to issue a red notice for his arrest and extradition. This indicates that the Special Prosecutor has exhausted local options and is now seeking global assistance.

Kpebu acknowledged that the OSP's actions are valid but suggested using modern technology could have helped. He believes an online interrogation might have met investigative needs without causing conflict.

The declaration of Ofori-Atta as wanted has sparked public and legal debate. It raises questions about accountability, due process, and how far Ghana’s institutions will go to hold powerful officials accountable.
