MPs Inspect Zoomlion Facility in Kumasi
John Oti Bless, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, has rejected calls to end Zoomlion Ghana Limited's contract. Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni urged against renewing the contract under the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP). He claimed that "the cleaners' deal is just one of them and it stinks to the heavens."
After touring Zoomlion's Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant on April 24, 2025, Mr. Oti Bless disagreed with Manasseh. He warned that many Ghanaians would lose their jobs if the contract is not renewed.
He stated, “If there are issues with the contract, we must address them.” His committee plans to invite Manasseh Azure Awuni to share his concerns. “We want him to appear before us next week,” he added.
Mr. Oti Bless emphasized that Zoomlion and Jospong Group of Companies employ many Ghanaians. Instead of terminating their contract, he believes they should be supported to grow and create more jobs.
As the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North Constituency, he highlighted the importance of supporting local businesses. He noted that non-renewal would significantly impact thousands of Ghanaians.
Mr. Oti Bless expressed confidence that the government would pay the GHC 1.2 billion owed to Zoomlion as promised by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. He also mentioned discussions with YEA CEO about improving pay for sweepers.
After touring KCARP, Mr. Oti Bless praised Zoomlion and JGC for their investments in sanitation management. “I am impressed! This is my first time witnessing such investment,” he said.
He urged everyone to support Jospong Group and emphasized that a private company’s success relies on government support.
Samuel Ntummy, General Manager of KCARP, appreciated the committee's visit and called for support for private waste management companies like Zoomlion to enhance sanitation in Ghana.
