It is a big relief as the Ghana cedi is surging in value – Speaker Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Alban S.K. Bagbin, expressed relief over the Ghana cedi's rising value. He noted that the cedi is appreciating against many global currencies. This trend could make Ghana an attractive investment destination.

In a Facebook post, Speaker Bagbin stated, “It is a big relief as the Ghana cedi is surging in value.” He emphasized that this makes Ghana’s economy competitive again.

He also mentioned that cross-border traders are benefiting from this increase. For the first time in a long while, traders can lower their prices. People are more willing to invoice and receive payments in cedis now.

Bagbin believes these changes will positively impact general prices for all Ghanaians. He encouraged everyone to keep pushing for progress in Ghana and Africa.

His comments follow a Bloomberg report stating that the Ghana cedi is the best-performing currency globally against the US dollar. The cedi has appreciated by 16% since early April.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance, assured that this appreciation is not temporary. He stated it will be sustained over time.

Ato Forson urged businesses to adjust their pricing accordingly as the cedi improves. He said, “We are seeing improvements in the cedi; it’s time for businesses to reflect this.”

As of May 9, 2025, the exchange rate is GH¢13.1 to one US dollar.
