Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Manhyia South MP, is worried. He fears Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo might be suspended. This could happen during her ongoing removal petition process.
Baffour Awuah called the situation alarming. He warned that such an action could harm the judiciary's reputation.
On JoyNews' Newsfile programme, he expressed his concerns. He said suspending the Chief Justice would hurt public confidence in the courts. “It is frightening to think that our judiciary's head can be suspended,” he stated.
His worries come after President John Dramani Mahama responded to Torkonoo’s request. She asked for copies of the petitions against her. The President has given her 10 days to review and respond.
Baffour Awuah cautioned about handling this process carefully. He believes it could set a dangerous precedent for future governments. “The judiciary is our democracy's last line of defense,” he said.
He emphasized the need for caution in these matters. We must avoid a system where Chief Justices can be easily removed by new governments, he warned.
