It’s dangerous to our democracy – MP on Wontumi’s Detention

Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, the MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga, is worried about Chairman Wontumi's detention. He believes it sets a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mumuni said, “It has been over 48 hours. This is dangerous for our democracy.” He criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and warned of future consequences.

Mumuni asked what would happen if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took power. “Should we also pursue NDC businessmen? That would be wrong,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on May 27 by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He was later taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His arrest involves allegations of financial misconduct related to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that Wontumi is under criminal investigation. The charges include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

“Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various offenses,” Srem-Sai stated in an official announcement.

He added that EOCO's investigation includes asset recovery efforts. This aims to prevent any suspected proceeds from being dissipated further.

“The criminal investigation runs alongside asset recovery processes,” Srem-Sai explained.
