The legacy of Okomfo Anokye is finally being celebrated.
After years of requests for recognition, a grand ceremony took place.
It featured traditional regalia, drumming, and dance. Chiefs, queen mothers, and residents gathered in Awukugua.
This event officially launched the first Okomfo Anokye Festival.
Awukugua is in the Akuapem North Municipality. It is believed to be Okomfo Anokye's birthplace from the 1600s.
The festival is a joint effort by Awukuguaman and the Asanteman Council. Its goal is to honor Okomfo Kwame Anokye Frimpong Kotobre’s life and influence.
He was known for his spiritual power and role in establishing the Ashanti Kingdom.
Historian Anokye Frimpong Esq. expressed his joy at the tribute. He called it long overdue.
“I believe it should have started 100 years ago,” he said. “But if it starts today, that’s fine.” He wants everyone in Ghana to participate.
He noted that Okomfo Anokye's influence extended beyond Awukugua.
“He lived part of his life in Denkyira and Ashanti,” he explained. “He was dedicated to the people and nation.”
Mr. Frimpong also advocated for recognizing African Traditional Religion as a respected faith under God.
“We need a national festival to show respect for African Traditional Religion,” he emphasized.
The festival aims to become an annual event. It will attract Ghanaians and Africans abroad reconnecting with their spiritual heritage.
