Dr. Nii Moi Thompson is the Chairman of Ghana’s National Development Planning Commission. He recently addressed claims about the Ghanaian cedi's gains. Some attribute these gains to US President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
Dr. Thompson disagreed, saying, “Trump doesn’t even know where Ghana is.” He emphasized that it would be foolish to credit everything to Trump. His comments drew laughter and agreement at the GETSPA conference in Accra.
He acknowledged global factors like a weakening US dollar may have helped. However, he insisted that Ghana deserves credit for its own efforts. These include fiscal discipline from the Ministry of Finance and monetary tightening by the Bank of Ghana.
Dr. Thompson highlighted the need for better domestic economic governance. He urged Parliament to take a more active role in public borrowing oversight. “Parliament must demand rigorous analysis before approving loans,” he said.
He stressed the importance of understanding how funds will be allocated and monitored. Stronger institutional checks are essential for effective governance, he concluded.
