A 16-year-old boy named Nfoye Jonas found a lost wallet. The wallet belonged to Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar, the Executive Director of the West Africa Centre for Counter Extremism. Jonas returned the wallet and received GH₵ 6,200 as a reward. This money will help him return to school.
On April 23, 2025, Jonas was running an errand on his motorbike. He spotted a purse by the roadside but did not open it. Instead, he took it home and gave it to his uncle, Mr. Emmanuel Bigbei. They discovered valuable items inside and decided to return them.
Mr. Bigbei took Jonas to Sankara Radio in Yendi. There, they handed over the wallet to manager David Takal. They hoped the owner would come forward.
The wallet contained several important items: VISA cards, GH₵ 2,530, USD 180, 2,000 CFA Francs, a Voter’s ID card, a driver’s license, and a Ghana Card. Mr. Muqthar lost it while driving at night between Yendi and Wulensi.
After realizing his wallet was missing, Mr. Muqthar posted on Facebook for help. Mr. Takal saw the post and contacted him about the found wallet.
Mr. Muqthar expressed gratitude for Jonas's honesty and kindness. He praised this act as true patriotism and honesty.
Jonas is an orphan; his father died three years ago when he was in JHS 1. His uncle has been responsible for his education since then but struggled with fees. This led Jonas to drop out of school despite wanting to continue.
When Jonas found the purse with cash inside, he never thought of keeping it. He believed returning it was right even if it meant traveling twice to Yendi.
Their motorbike was broken down so they borrowed one from a neighbor for their trip to Sankara Radio.
Mr. Muqthar called Jonas and his family heroes of society who inspire future generations with their values.
To support Jonas's education or career development, Mr. Muqthar launched a fundraising campaign on Facebook after learning about his honesty.
He started with an initial donation of GH₵ 1,000 and added another GH₵ 1,000 to encourage others to contribute.
In total, GH₵ 6,200 was raised for Jonas's education or vocational training needs.
Over the weekend, Mr. Muqthar visited Jonas's community to present the funds officially.
Many residents welcomed him warmly when they learned he was visiting because of Jonas's actions.
During their meeting with the family, Mr. Muqthar expressed admiration for how they raised such an honest child.
He emphasized that Jonas’s conduct should serve as an example for society moving forward.
The funds were presented as contributions from well-wishers moved by Jonas's integrity.
The family plans to use this money for glassmaking training for Jonas.
They aimed to keep the encounter joyful without making it overly emotional.
Jonas and his family were excited about this opportunity ahead.
