JOYNEWS condemns the attack on our reporter, Latif Iddrisu. He was covering the arrest of NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
Latif was live reporting from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). During this time, he was assaulted by individuals believed to be Mr. Boasiako's supporters. They had gathered to show their support for him.
Some attackers struck Latif on the head. Others used a stone and a rubber band as weapons. This assault on a journalist is unacceptable and must be condemned strongly.
Journalists report events in the public interest. Any attempt to obstruct or intimidate them threatens press freedom and democracy.
We have reported the incident to the police. We call for a swift investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
We acknowledge the apology from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). We expect them to fully cooperate with police efforts to bring justice.
