Japan promises to support Volivo bridge project; invites Mahama to TICAD

Japan has expressed strong interest in financing a bridge over Volta Lake. This bridge is crucial for Ghana's Eastern Corridor road project.

Miyazaki Katsura, from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), shared this during a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama on June 3. The proposed Volivo bridge will complete the Eastern Corridor road. It is part of President Mahama's $10 billion "Big Push" initiative to improve Ghana's infrastructure.

The Big Push aims to invest $2 billion annually for five years. This funding will target roads, bridges, education, and healthcare. Katsura expressed happiness that the Volivo Bridge project is included in this initiative.

He assured President Mahama of JICA's commitment to further discussions with Japan’s government. A technical team will visit Ghana to assess additional funding needs for the project.

Mr. Mahama previously secured Japan’s support for this project during his Tokyo visit. He also accepted an invitation to the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August. He plans to engage with the Japanese government about securing necessary funding for construction.
