Japan reaffirms support for Volivo Bridge project

Japan has reaffirmed its support for the Volivo Bridge project. This bridge will be built over Volta Lake as part of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road initiative.

Miyazaki Katsura, from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), shared this commitment. He spoke during a visit to President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday.

The Volivo Bridge is crucial for President Mahama's $10 billion "Big Push" initiative. This plan aims to invest $2 billion annually for five years in infrastructure projects. These include roads, bridges, education, and healthcare.

The bridge will improve connectivity and boost economic activity along the Eastern Corridor. Katsura expressed happiness that the project is included in the Big Push initiative. JICA plans to discuss further steps with the Japanese government.

A JICA technical team will visit Ghana soon. They will assess the project's scope and funding needs.

President Mahama first attracted Japan's interest during a previous visit to Tokyo. This renewed engagement shows Japan's ongoing support for Ghana’s infrastructure development.

Additionally, President Mahama accepted an invitation to attend TICAD in August. He plans to use this opportunity to strengthen cooperation and secure resources for the bridge.

The Volivo Bridge project is expected to transform regional trade and integration. It will also complete the Eastern Corridor road network.
