Kelvin Sevor, a 26-year-old labourer, has been sentenced to six months in prison. The Accra Circuit Court found him guilty of failing to pay GH¢6,600 in penalties and compensation. This amount was for harming a man he suspected of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Sevor lives on Mango Street in Kotobabi. He attacked Isaac Bortey, a trader at Texpo Market, with a machete. This unprovoked attack occurred on March 4, 2025.
The court session was presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah. Sevor was initially remanded into police custody on May 15, 2025. He pleaded guilty to the offence, but his sentencing was postponed until June 6, 2025.
During the judgment, the court fined Sevor 300 penalty units or GH¢3,600. If he failed to pay this fine, he would serve six months in prison. Additionally, he had to pay GH¢3,000 in compensation for medical expenses incurred by Bortey.
Sevor did not meet these financial obligations and is now serving his sentence. Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah-Ofori reported that the incident began with threatening messages from Sevor to Bortey. These messages accused Bortey of being involved with Sevor's girlfriend named Sylvia.
On the day of the attack, Bortey was talking to someone when Sevor approached him from behind. He attacked Bortey with a machete and caused serious injuries to his abdomen and arm. Eyewitnesses saw the entire incident unfold.
Bortey managed to report the attack while bleeding heavily. He received a medical form and sought treatment afterward. Police launched a manhunt for Sevor and arrested him at a hideout.
Investigators recovered the weapon used in the attack from the scene. They also documented Bortey’s injuries with photographs as evidence against Sevor. He was charged under Section 69 of the Criminal Code for causing harm before being brought to court for prosecution.
