John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, addressed recent media reports about stolen state-owned containers. He outlined steps to tackle the issue and ensure accountability.
During an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Jinapor acknowledged concerns about evidence tampering. He emphasized the need for action regarding the theft.
Jinapor proposed tracking the containers using their serial numbers. “The system should show where the containers ended up,” he explained. This method aims to improve tracking and resolve the case effectively.
In an open letter, Jinapor stated that National Security had secured the containers. “You can check from records that National Security has secured these containers,” he said. He expressed confidence in handling the situation and mentioned plans to recover stolen assets.
He also decided to involve relevant authorities in the investigation for accountability. “I’ve written formally to the Attorney-General to start criminal investigations,” he noted. Additionally, he contacted the NIB to investigate all 1,300 containers involved.
Jinapor stressed prosecuting those responsible for this theft. He highlighted the government’s commitment to recovering state property. “Let no one say this is witch-hunting,” he added.
Finally, Jinapor urged swift action to secure remaining containers. “I’ve written to National Security about 706 containers,” he said. He emphasized that securing them quickly is crucial for proper stocktaking and resolution of this matter.
