Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has launched a probe into the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) procurement activities under the Akufo-Addo administration.
He revealed that ECG engaged in excessive purchases, leaving 3,000 containers stuck at ports, accumulating GHS 1.5 billion in demurrage.
Jinapor described the situation as financial mismanagement, with some procured items set to expire before use.
A committee has been set up to investigate the transactions, while a broader audit covering ECG’s human resources and technical operations is also planned.
Preliminary findings indicate procurement irregularities, and the minister aims to implement reforms to enhance efficiency in the energy sector.
The government’s review seeks to curb waste and improve policy direction for sustainable power management.
