John Evans Atta Mills Honoured: UHAS renamed after Ghana’s late president

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, announced a name change for the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho.

The university will now be called John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences (JEA Mills UHAS). This change honors the late president’s legacy in health and education.

Minister Iddrisu made the announcement during the inauguration of the new Governing Council. He emphasized that this renaming is not just symbolic. It reflects Professor Mills' important role in establishing the institution.

“This renaming honors a visionary leader,” he said. “His legacy continues to shape Ghana’s development.”

The decision received enthusiastic support from the new Governing Council, led by Professor Kodzo Gavua. Prof. Gavua promised that the Council would work hard to maintain academic excellence and serve the nation.

John Evans Atta Mills was a law professor and former Vice President. He served as President of Ghana from 2009 until his death in 2012.

Prof. Mills was known for his calm demeanor, integrity, and commitment to social justice. He promoted initiatives that improved access to education and healthcare.

His vision led to the establishment of UHAS in 2011, making it the first public university in the Volta Region.
