Ing. Kirk Koffi, a former CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA), believes Energy Minister John Jinapor will fix the power supply issues.
Koffi stated that Jinapor is on the right track. He emphasized that resolving fuel supply problems takes time and careful planning.
Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Koffi said, “This government just came in. If there is a fuel supply challenge, it takes time to arrange for fuel.” He mentioned that the government has recently purchased crude oil.
Koffi expressed confidence in Jinapor's efforts: “He is going to fix it; he is on the right track.”
Meanwhile, John Jinapor urged Ghanaians not to panic about potential power crises. He spoke to members of Parliament's Energy Committee about funding needs.
Jinapor noted that $1.1 billion is required for liquid fuel procurement. However, this cost isn't included in the tariff structure.
He explained that they owe Karpower over $400 million and IPPs $1.7 billion. This situation is serious for the energy sector.
Jinapor highlighted that ECG struggles to collect all revenues, leading to a monthly deficit of 2 billion cedis. When factoring in unpaid fuel costs, total debts exceed 30 billion cedis.
On Citi Eyewitness News, Jinapor clarified the current power situation. The government has procured 450,000 barrels of light crude oil arriving this weekend.
He reassured listeners: “We have 2.6 days of fuel stock.” With new supplies coming in, he said there’s no need for panic about a looming crisis.
“We will be okay,” he concluded confidently.
