Veteran Ghanaian comedian and filmmaker Kwaku Sintim-Misa, known as KSM, is worried about journalism in Ghana. He describes it as cheap, politicised, sensational, and lacking depth.
KSM spoke on The Career Trail programme on Joy Learning TV and JoyNews. He criticised the trend of political alignment in the media. He believes this undermines the core values of journalism.
“Unfortunately, in Ghana, journalism has become politicised,” he said. “Are you an NPP journalist or an NDC journalist? That’s what we’re seeing now.”
He explained that this politicisation harms journalism's integrity. It often hides the truth instead of revealing it.
KSM noted that chasing sensationalism is a major problem. Many journalists focus on trivial topics rather than meaningful content.
“It’s easier to go for the sensational,” he observed. “Sadly, there’s an audience for that.”
Many journalists and bloggers choose this path for attention. This shift toward click-driven content has cheapened journalism.
“Journalism has become cheap and sensational, not factual,” he emphasised.
He also pointed to online platforms and social media as part of the issue. These allow people to publish unverified information without accountability.
Despite his concerns, KSM encouraged young people to pursue journalism. He urged aspiring journalists to focus on authentic storytelling that benefits society.
He cited Multimedia journalist Erastus Asare Donkor as an example of excellence. “Look at Erastus Asare; his work is amazing,” he said.
KSM advised upcoming professionals to uphold truth and purpose in their work. “Make a conscious effort to set yourself apart,” he concluded.
