JoyNews, in partnership with the German Embassy in Ghana, will host Climate Talks. This initiative focuses on sustainable solutions for climate change, especially clean cooking.
The first event is on May 15, 2025. It will take place at the James Town Methodist Church. The discussion will highlight Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Climate Change Agenda 2030. Topics include clean cooking practices and healthier lifestyles.
Over 53% of Ghanaian households use traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal. These methods harm the environment and expose users to indoor air pollution. Cleaner alternatives can reduce health risks and improve sustainability.
German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, spoke about the urgency of climate action. He emphasized media partnerships to raise awareness about clean cooking.
“We want to collaborate with the media,” he said. “Our goal is to create a platform for affected individuals, experts, and decision-makers.” They aim to exchange ideas and set ambitious climate targets.
The Ambassador highlighted private sector responsibility in high-emission sectors like cement and mining. He warned against importing outdated technologies that harm the environment.
“Some products are banned elsewhere but dumped here,” he cautioned. “Consumers should question the sustainability of what they buy.”
To support Ghana’s green transition, the German Embassy is launching several initiatives. One is the Government Goes Green program, a €20 million fund for renewable energy systems in public institutions. This is part of a broader cooperation valued at around €800 million.
Ambassador Krull praised JoyNews for its commitment to climate journalism. “We are encouraged by JoyNews’ efforts in tackling the climate crisis,” he added.
The Climate Talks event will be broadcast live at 10 a.m., with seating starting at 9:30 a.m. Audiences can watch on JoyNews and Asempa FM for full coverage. The theme is “Climate Talks: Nationally Determined Contributions in Action.”
Climate change affects everyone; it’s both a global concern and a local emergency in Ghana. From heatwaves to disappearing coastlines, its impact is evident now. However, challenges also present opportunities for change. Climate Talks aims to foster a greener future for all.
