Associate Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua from the University of Ghana School of Law has addressed public concerns. He spoke about the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. This suspension occurred on April 22, 2025, after President John Dramani Mahama acted on three petitions for her removal.
On Eyewitness News, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua reassured listeners that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution supports judicial continuity. He stated that justice delivery would not be significantly affected. The Constitution allows a senior judge to temporarily fill in for the Chief Justice.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is currently serving as Acting Chief Justice. He was appointed according to Article 144(6) of the Constitution. Prof. Appiagyei-Atua noted that cases handled by the suspended Chief Justice will be managed by the acting Chief Justice.
The suspension has led to much discussion, but experts believe the judiciary remains functional and intact.
