Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised serious concerns. He calls the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo a threat to Ghana’s democracy. This suspension was enacted by President John Mahama.
Afenyo-Markin spoke at a demonstration on May 5. The event was organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and allied groups. He warned that this move threatens judicial independence, calling it “a negative reset.”
“The judiciary should be neutral in our democracy,” he stated. “It is our last hope, and this undermines democracy and the rule of law.”
He also criticized the Council of State for failing to support the Chief Justice. He described the attack on her as politically motivated.
“For the Chief Justice to be targeted like this is unfortunate,” he said. “The Council of State has failed the country.”
He urged them to set aside differences and recognize their institution is under attack. “Today it is Torkornoo; tomorrow it might be you,” he cautioned.
In his critique of the executive branch, Afenyo-Markin stated, “You don’t serve at the whims of a political party.” He added that if they wanted to be politicians, they would join a political party. He called the treatment of the Chief Justice “repugnant to good conscience.”
