Renowned journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has commented on the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He urges Ghanaians to prioritize accountability over partisan loyalty.
In a social media post on May 5, 2025, he warned against blind support for institutions. This includes the judiciary, which should not escape scrutiny.
Manasseh acknowledged constitutional protections for public officeholders. However, he argued that these should not mean immunity from accountability.
He stated, “The framers of our constitution were wise enough to secure tenure… but security of tenure and immunity from accountability are not synonymous.”
In his book “The President Ghana Never Got,” he criticized the judiciary's recent leadership. He claimed it has failed to uphold impartiality and integrity.
Manasseh described the judiciary as an “accomplice” to former President Nana Akufo-Addo. He lamented its failure to check executive overreach effectively.
“There are excellent judges dispensing justice in our courts,” he noted. However, he believes the leadership of the judiciary has been lacking over the years.
As political debate grows over Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension, Manasseh calls for a shift in focus. He urges the public to demand fairness while ensuring transparency in the judiciary.
“If our judiciary had a mind of its own… some political excesses would be curtailed,” he said. He emphasized that accountability is essential against tyranny within this sacred institution.
The petition for Chief Justice Torkornoo's removal has sparked widespread debate. Supporters and critics invoke constitutional principles and institutional integrity in their arguments.
Manasseh’s comments contribute significantly to this discussion. He advocates for principled engagement rather than partisan perspectives on the issue.
