June 3 disaster caused by failure to enforce spatial plans – LUSPA

Dr. Benedict Arkhurst is the Head of Plan Preparation at LUSPA. He discussed the tragic disaster on June 3, 2015. This disaster was one of Ghana’s worst events. It happened due to heavy rains that caused severe flooding at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

The floodwaters mixed with leaking fuel from a nearby GOIL station. This led to a massive explosion that killed over 150 people. Many victims were seeking shelter from the rain.

On Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Dr. Arkhurst spoke about the tragedy. He believes it should have changed urban planning in Ghana. “We all thought such a disaster shouldn’t happen again,” he said.

He blamed the incident on poor development control and lack of spatial plan implementation. Dr. Arkhurst emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of planning regulations. He stated, “Non-implementation of spatial plans and lack of proper development control” were key issues.
