Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to act as CJ following Torkornoo’s suspension

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has been appointed Acting Chief Justice. This follows the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. His appointment is based on Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution. This article states that the most senior Justice acts as Chief Justice when needed.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been on the Supreme Court since June 2008. He was appointed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. He now takes over during a critical time for Ghana’s Judiciary.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on April 22, 2025. This action followed a prima facie case established against her. The suspension is linked to three petitions calling for her removal from office.

A five-member committee has been formed to investigate these allegations. This committee was set up after consultations with the Council of State. The specific details of the petitions have not been made public.

The President's decision has sparked intense legal and political debate. Concerns about judicial independence and due process have been raised. Until the investigation concludes, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will lead the Judiciary in Ghana.
