Justice Gertrude Torkornoo
Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey, has taken legal action. She filed a motion at the Supreme Court to stop a presidential committee. This committee is investigating her alleged misconduct.
The suit is numbered J8/113/2025. It was filed on May 21, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The Attorney-General leads the case as the main plaintiff. Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu are also listed as plaintiffs. Ironically, they are part of the committee being challenged.
Other respondents include former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelovo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah. The motion seeks an interlocutory injunction to prevent the committee from continuing its inquiry.
The Chief Justice claims that further actions by the committee would harm her rights and disrupt constitutional processes. Her application requests several specific orders:
1. To restrain the committee from taking any action against her until the case is resolved.
2. To bar Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu from participating due to conflicts of interest.
3. To suspend a presidential warrant for her suspension under Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution.
4. Any other reliefs deemed appropriate by the Court.
Godfred Yeboah Dame, former Attorney-General, filed this motion on behalf of the Chief Justice through his law firm, Dame & Partners. The Supreme Court will hear this application in the coming days.
