Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MP for Old Tafo, is disappointed. He reacted to the Supreme Court's decision. The court dismissed his application to stop Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal and suspension.
The ruling was close, with a 3-2 majority. Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie led the panel. Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko supported him. Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu disagreed.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Senshow, Mr. Assafuah raised concerns. He questioned the fairness of the process. He specifically criticized the Acting Chief Justice for empaneling himself.
The MP emphasized that justice must be visible to maintain public trust. He hinted at a possible review of the ruling in the future.
The full reasons for the court's decision will be available on May 21, 2025.
Assafuah stated, “Justice must be seen to be done.” He believes this is vital for public confidence. He suggested that if he were Acting Chief Justice, he would step aside from this case.
He noted there are many capable judges who could handle it instead. While he does not claim it is unconstitutional, he feels the Acting Chief Justice should not preside over such matters. In his view, the court made an error in this situation.
