Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Managing Director of GoldBod, spoke about Ghana’s justice system. He said it could have faced serious issues if President John Mahama had not suspended Chief Justice Mrs. Gertrude Torkornoo. She is currently under investigation for alleged misconduct.
Gyamfi emphasized that the suspension was necessary to maintain justice. He discussed this on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM on April 24. The president's decision followed allegations against the Chief Justice and an ongoing investigation.
The Chief Justice oversees the judiciary and ensures justice in Ghana. Gyamfi believes she could not effectively perform her duties while defending herself in this situation.
He stated, “No one can convince me that she could give necessary attention to her duties while also defending herself.” He compared the investigation to a trial, which would distract her from her vital responsibilities.
Gyamfi argued that justice is too important to be managed by someone under investigation. He noted that the Chief Justice would struggle to focus on her duties while dealing with this issue.
“She wouldn’t have the peace of mind needed for crucial decisions,” he added. This distraction could undermine public trust in the judiciary.
Mr. Gyamfi highlighted how unfair it would be for both the Chief Justice and the public. They rely on a functioning justice system, which requires full attention from its leaders.
He concluded that suspending the Chief Justice was sensible and necessary. This decision allows her time to focus on her defense without administrative pressures.
“The suspension ensures that the judiciary continues to operate smoothly,” he said. It also gives her a chance to address allegations properly, benefiting justice overall.
Gyamfi believes the Chief Justice will appreciate this opportunity as well. It allows her to concentrate fully on defending herself against these petitions.
“This provides her with time and resources for a thorough response,” he concluded, preserving her integrity during this process.
