KNUST TEWU-GH declares indefinite strike over governing council dispute

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) chapter of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has announced an indefinite strike. This strike will begin on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

The decision follows what TEWU-GH calls the unjust sidelining of its members. This occurred during the formation of KNUST's new governing council. The council was inaugurated on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Akyamfoɔ Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu is the newly appointed Chairman.

TEWU-TUC, another group, was chosen to represent TEWU on this council. TEWU-GH claims this decision is biased and undemocratic. They argue it violates their rights as a majority union.

TEWU-GH has 789 members compared to TEWU-TUC's 123 members. They believe recognizing a minority union over a majority one undermines labor freedom. Therefore, they demand that GTEC withdraw TEWU-TUC from the governing council.

At a news conference on April 30, Chairman Charles Arthur stated that his members will not work until this decision is reversed. He emphasized that GTEC has sidelined the majority union at KNUST by choosing TEWU-TUC as the representative.

Arthur described this situation as a violation of democratic principles and an act of suppression against workers' rights. He urged the President and other stakeholders to intervene for fairness in governance.

He also called on Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, Director-General of GTEC, to reverse this decision immediately. Until then, TEWU-Ghana KNUST Local will continue its indefinite strike starting today.
