KNUST study links poor nutrition to worsening lymphatic filariasis

New research from Kwame Nkrumah University and the University of South Florida shows a strong link between poor nutrition and lymphatic filariasis (LF).

LF, also known as elephantiasis, is caused by parasitic worms. It leads to severe swelling in limbs, breasts, and scrotum. This condition often results in disability, social stigma, and a lower quality of life.

LF is common in tropical and subtropical areas. West Africa faces significant challenges with malnutrition and infectious diseases.

The study was published in PLOS ONE. Researchers used machine learning to analyze the nutritional status of 109 participants from Ghana's Ahanta West Municipality. This region has a high burden of LF.

The findings revealed high rates of malnutrition at 70.7% and anaemia at 84%. There were also significant deficiencies in protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins.

Researchers identified key factors influencing LF progression. These include vitamins C and K, blood pressure, folate levels, and age.

Lead researcher Kobla Atsu Amewu and Benedicta Amaglo stressed the urgent need for integrated health strategies. They advocate for nutritional support alongside medical treatment to improve patient outcomes.
