Sanitation conditions are worsening in the Awutu Senya East Municipality. Residents fear a possible cholera outbreak and want immediate government action.
In the Central Business District (CBD) of Kasoa, garbage piles are everywhere. They line road curbs, intersections, and bus stops. The worst areas are around the New Market and old market zone. The smell from decomposing waste is unbearable for traders and commuters.
Transport operators expressed their frustration in an interview with Channel One News on May 18. “We are suffering; there’s an awful stench here,” one operator said. He noted that refuse, including human excreta, is dumped at night.
Residents remember last year's cholera outbreak that killed eight people. Many others were infected in the municipality. They worry that without urgent action, another health crisis could occur.
Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, the local Member of Parliament, called for modern waste management solutions. She hopes new technologies will help collect and recycle refuse effectively.
In response to public concerns, the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly promised to improve waste handling. Municipal Chief Executive Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini said they are looking for dedicated waste collection sites.
“We are searching for places to keep our containers,” he stated. Residents remain hopeful for swift action to prevent another health disaster.
