Dr. Kingsley Agyeman, MP-elect for Abuakwa South, has called for immediate government intervention to rebuild Accra's Katamanto market, following a devastating fire that destroyed over 30,000 businesses.

Speaking after MPs' registration in Parliament, he opposed traders' self-led reconstruction efforts, stressing the need for proper engineering and safety standards.

“We can’t rebuild the same way that led to the fire. Government must take charge to ensure safety and prevent future disasters,” he stated, advocating for market insurance as part of the plan.

The January 1 fire, which claimed one life, is under investigation, with faulty wiring or arson suspected.

Meanwhile, Gbese Stool authorities have warned against erecting wooden structures on the land, asserting ownership.
