The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel George, announced that the government will not extend the Kelni-GVG contract.
He made this announcement at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 9.
The decision aims to restructure Ghana’s digital and communications oversight systems. This is intended to improve efficiency and ensure better value for money.
The Kelni-GVG deal was signed in 2018. It was meant to monitor real-time call traffic and ensure accurate revenue declaration by telecom companies. However, it has faced criticism over its cost and transparency.
As of October 2024, the Minister stated that Kelni-GVG earned 84% of all revenues generated under the contract.
These figures raised concerns about cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
Stakeholders in telecom and civil society have called for a re-evaluation of the contract’s terms. They cite issues related to privacy, technical efficiency, and financial benefits favoring Kelni-GVG.
