Private lawyer Robert Nii Arday Clegg has spoken about Anas Aremeyaw Anas' legal win. This victory was in his defamation case against former MP Kennedy Agyapong. Clegg discussed this on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on May 12.
He addressed the public debate over the damages awarded. The New Jersey Superior Court reduced them from $18 million to $500. However, Clegg stated that the court's ruling is clear: Agyapong defamed Anas.
“The legal conclusion is simple,” Clegg said. “Anas went to court claiming Agyapong defamed him. The jury reviewed the facts and agreed.” He emphasized that this conclusion is not debatable.
Clegg explained that while the judge reduced damages, the finding of defamation remains unchanged. “As it stands, Agyapong is deemed by the court to have defamed Anas,” he stressed.
He warned against misinterpreting the outcome of the case. “Attempts to twist the narrative misrepresent the legal facts,” he asserted.
His comments come as public opinion in Ghana remains divided. Supporters of Agyapong celebrate the reduced damages as a win. Meanwhile, others, including Anas, see it as a reaffirmation of his credibility.
