Ken Agyapong stands as surety for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi in $2m Sky Train trial

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is now a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). He is on trial related to the $2 million Accra Sky Train project.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was granted bail set at GH¢10 million. He needed two sureties to be justified. Mr. Agyapong, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party, met part of this requirement. He vouches for the 80-year-old academic, whose age and health are noted in court.

The former GIIF chair pleaded not guilty to four charges. These include causing financial loss to the state and misusing public funds. The charges stem from a $2 million payment to Africa Investor Holdings for a Sky Train project that never happened.

As part of his bail conditions, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi must surrender his travel documents. He also needs to report weekly to the police. The trial is before Justice Comfort Tasiame at the High Court in Accra. It has been adjourned until June 10, 2025, for a case management conference.
