Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP for Assin Central, has stepped in as a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). He was recently granted bail.
This occurred during court proceedings on May 26. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi's bail was set at GH¢10 million. The court required two sureties to justify this amount with landed property in Greater Accra.
Citi News confirmed that Agyapong volunteered as one of the sureties. His legal team is working to meet the bail conditions.
Earlier, Duke Aaron Sasu, counsel for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, requested bail on his client's own recognisance. He highlighted Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s long public service record. This includes roles as Minister for Education and Minister for Ports and Harbours.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi also chaired the Board of the Public Procurement Authority. His defence noted his advanced age of 80 years and health issues requiring medical procedures.
Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai did not oppose the bail request. However, he urged the court to apply similar conditions as in previous cases—a GH¢15 million bail with two sureties justified by landed property.
Justice Comfort Tasiame ultimately set a reduced bail amount of GH¢10 million. The condition remains two sureties justified by landed property in Greater Accra.
