The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) announced that former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta must report to their headquarters on June 2, 2025.
An OSP official account on X confirmed this after a user inquired about Ofori-Atta's whereabouts. They stated, “Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to report at the headquarters of OSP on 2 June 2025. Thank you.”
The OSP warned that if he does not show up, he will be added back to their list of wanted persons.
Ofori-Atta has filed a lawsuit against the OSP. He challenges their declaration of him as a fugitive. The OSP previously removed his name from the wanted list after he requested it.
In their statement, the OSP said, “Mr. Ofori-Atta formally requested the removal of his name with assurance to appear for questioning.” They granted his request based on this assurance.
However, they emphasized that he must appear in person on June 2, 2025. If he fails to attend, he will be considered a fugitive again. An Interpol Red Notice may also be issued against him.
The OSP remains committed to enforcing the law regarding ongoing corruption investigations involving him.
Meanwhile, Ken Ofori-Atta has responded strongly against the OSP and its head, Kissi Agyebeng. Reports indicate that he has sued them for alleged rights violations.
His lawsuit was filed on March 13, 2025, at the Accra High Court. His legal team claims that declaring him a fugitive was unfair and capricious.
They argue that he did not evade the OSP but faced serious health issues requiring medical attention. These health challenges were communicated to the OSP before his declaration as a fugitive.
Despite being removed from the wanted list later, his legal team states that initial declarations caused significant reputational harm and stress.
They noted that Ken Ofori-Atta is still listed as wanted on the OSP’s website. The allegations against him include causing financial loss related to various state projects.
During a press conference, an official stated: “The fugitive’s name is Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori Atta.” He is 66 years old and served as finance minister from 2017 to 2024.
He reportedly left Ghana around January 2, 2025. On January 24, the OSP informed him about being considered a suspect in several cases and asked him to attend an interview on February 10.
Ofori-Atta instructed his lawyers to inform the OSP about his indefinite absence due to medical reasons.
Recently, the Office of the Special Prosecutor confirmed removing Ken Ofori-Atta from its wanted list after he confirmed his return date to Ghana.
